Manufacturer's Description The third game in the Fallout series, Fallout 3 is a singleplayer action role-playing game (RPG) set in a post-apocalyptic Washington DC. Combining the horrific insanity of the Cold War era theory of mutually assured destruction gone terribly wrong, with the kitschy naivety of American 1950s nuclear propaganda, Fallout 3 will satisfy both players familiar with the popular first two games in its series as well as those coming to the franchise for the first time. Welcome to the nation's capital. View larger. | The Brotherhood of Steel is a powerful ally. View larger. | Customize characters with your Pip-Boy. Crash City January 2, 2009 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Great game! Gameplay is superb and deeply involving. The amount of well realised locations and characters to discover is fantastic! It really sucks you in and gets better as you play.
Graphics wise, I wasn't really too impressed even on ultra settings - oh well! Be aware it crashes lots though (every 5 mins) - check the web - if nothing else works though turn off the anti-aliasing and it seems fine now.
Crashes all the time January 1, 2009 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a great game BUT it crashes every 10 minutes. I've followed all the Bethsheba tips, downloaded their patch, updated everything (but as my machine is new and pretty high end not much to do) but still it crashes. When they release a proper fix I'll love to play this again.
My favorite game of 2008 December 29, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Well what can i say? the title says it all for me, i pre ordered the collectors edition and even bought the collectors edition offical walkthrough.
Any one who has played oblivion will notice subtle things in fallout 3 (mainly because of the game engine) that occur in both games. Fallout 3 looks amazing, the storyline is captivating the missions (or quests if you prefere) are very fun and you get to play bad or good depending on what you decide to do as you progress through the game. Ive played it through twice now once as good once as bad and both are fun. The weapons are varied, everything you could want from a flame thrower to a laser gatling gun. The V.A.T.S. system (zoom in and blow certain body parts away) is very cool indeed when your skill improves you can watch those heads roll (quite literally) with a quad core amd, 1 gig nvidia 280 card and 4 gigs of true gaming ram im able to play the game on full settings for around 6 hours or so before the memory leak starts to affect things and i have to reboot.
Before my upgrade i did have a problem where the mouse and keyboard were not recognised but i put this down to my system configuration at the time as after the upgrade everything worked perfectly. Above all it takes the fallout games to the next level and beyond, a 100% fun game with minimal problems and truly a game i couldnt leave alone until it was finished. Make sure to explore the game fully as this is part of the fun, theres alot of side quests that you can miss out on if you just follow the main story (which isnt that long and is probably the least fun thing about the game)
Im hoping that this will be the first in a line of games like this.
Worthy of game of the year 2008 December 28, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Just finished the main story line after following numerous side quests (though not all) in over 100 hours! Having not really played any RPGs of any scale in at least 10 years, and not being familiar with previous Fallout games, this one attracted me far as the post-apocalyptic scenario and gameplay were concerned. Enough details have been covered regarding game mechanics in other reviews, so I'll stick to the good and bad points. I have trouble with system freezes after a few hours, but I think this is more to do with my slightly underpowered system than the software (I'm running XP SP2 with a lightly overclocked AMD 3800X2, 7900GS and 2GB RAM and no network interface). Certain locations cause a drop in frame rate and sometimes the camera takes 10-20 seconds to recover. This doesn't happen often enough to impair the gameplay but is annoying at times. The game is huge, with both a vast landscape and underground areas to explore, which lead to plenty of side-quests. The first person perspective is wonderfully immersive and the backdrops quite stunning. Conversations provide sufficient options for playing your character without feeling too restrictive. Occasionally conversation lines were only subtly different, so it was difficult to gauge how some answers would be interpreted or their effect on your progress. Combat is a combination of turn-based and FPS and you can choose to use one or the other or both. Money is not really a problem and there's plenty of ammo to be found. You do need to worry about repairing your weapons and clothing however so it's wise to pick up spares for repair. The best points about the game for me were the openness and non-linearity of the gameplay (very little restriction in your options for dealing with a scenario), the fact that everything you do has a consequence and the shear sense of immersion. To summarise, highly recommended action-RPG with plenty to do and plenty of room to play your chosen role. I'll think I'm going to check out the predecessors after this.
Ignore the whiners. There's no significant copy protection to speak of and it's so much more than Oblivion with guns December 27, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Firstly, I'll say that contrary to what some people claim Fallout 3 does not come with exactly the same copy protection of Spore. Instead it uses a much lesser version (i.e. about the level of security every PC game has).
Anyway, on to the game itself. The game uses a refined version of the Oblivion engine. Rather than leveling up skills as you use them, you instead level up by gaining XP. Each time you level up (your level caps at 20) you are given a number of points to spend on increasing your character's skills and are allowed to choose a "perk" which can do anything from increasing a few skills to granting you special dialogue options. This will come as a relief to anyone else who spent so many hours on Oblivion jumping off hills to raise your acrobatics skill.
By this point in time most people probably know about the realtime/GURPS combat in the game so I will simply skip the description. If you expect an FPS with RPG elements (along the lines of Deus Ex) then prepare to be disappointed. The game, at its core, is still very much an RPG. The combat is much more satisfying than Oblivion (as it would have to be) with plenty of varied weapons. Energy weapons disintegrate opponents, flamethrowers create a satisfying flame effect and most of the guns and melee weapons break limbs off their targets nicely.
What really sets Fallout 3 apart from Oblivion, however, and brings it closer to earlier Fallout titles is the speech system. While it was more or less useless in the later, it is possible to get much more pleasing results. Talking your way out of fights is genuinely satisfying and being more sociable really does have tangible benefits. Furthermore you can do something I tend to find other RPGs overlook: you can be evil through being manipulative rather than violent (one particularly good example is being able to convince a shop owner to give up on her, admitedly eccentric, dreams to grant yourself a discount at her store), the same obviously applies to being "good".
The only issues I really have with the game are its stability (the game is quite temperamental and glitchy, although there is nothing to intolerable I do recommend saving as often as possible) and the story. Without spoiling the ending, there are a few plotholes and some frustrating logic. Not to mention the fact that once the main quest ends, so does the game.
In conclusion;
Graphics: 9/10 - A little dull but this fits the setting nicely Setting: 9/10 It lacks the dark humour of earlier Fallout games, but the more serious tone still sucks you in nicely. Story: 7/10 - Engaging enough, with a few too many plotholes. Gameplay: 9/10 - Everything that was good about previous Bethesda titles with the balance issues that plagued Oblivion removed, for the most part.
Overall: 9/10 - A strong candidate for GOTY 2008
