4 out of 5 stars The Best FPS I've Ever Played   January 6, 2009
I have recently bought this game having heard of The Darkness Comics and loving the storylines and artwork, also the price was cheap and I have read alot of the reviews from other users. Here is my feedback.

This is an 18 for a reason, its full of really really bad language & violence, both fun gory stuff & disturbing stuff (like commiting suicide so your character can go to hell).

So you have probably heard that you are possessed by a demon & are fighting the mafia, and that the graphics are great & the storyline is great... so I won't repeat this, instead I will correct some of negative comments made by others.

"lack of 'regular' people".... its night time, so not that many people would be on the streets, whilst the subway stations are really busy and give you fun mini missions.

"Jackie is weak, blah blah blah".... Exactly how many people do you know who can take serval bullets from serval ruthless gansters at one time without dying? I would say its realistic

"You can't shoot straight".... I don't even understand this comment, but I've had no problem. You carry 2 guns and shoot each weapon independently with the R1 & L1 buttons. Both guns use one aiming device (a red spot, like in sniper sequences) and playing on medium difficultly if you get close to an enemies head or a light, it auto corrects the aim and locks onto the target.

"You have to shoot lights & its boring"... This is great fun, it adds a thrilling element to the game, as you shoot out lights, it serves 2 purposes, 1) the levels get darker & darker, giving you stronger power & 2) it gives your location away to your enemy so they actually come after you, and as said above, Jackie is a normal 'weak' human so it keeps you on the edge of your seat.

"Jackie only has one speed, slow"... I think people are missing the point, this is not a run around blasting everything type of game, this is not a keep your finger on the uzi trigger type of game, this is an ultra violent, unfolding story, stay in the shadows type of game. If you want speed, use your demon arm (which is like a second character, and is fully controllable) which you can use at any time to speed across any surface, the floor, ceiling and walls to attack enemies and devour their hearts.

"There is no map"... Do you need a map to get around your local area? I don't carry a map to get around my local city, and this is a realistic game. I think this game really benefits from having no level map, you find you have to look for street signs or take subway trains to destinations, and find your way around the city. And it gives it a very claustrophobic atmosphere.

Of all the comments, the only thing I would agree with is the loading times, they aren't all that long (a few seconds), but there is a loading "video sequence" every time you die and restart from a checkpoint, which if you die alot gets a little tiresome. The developers have tried to make even this as interesting as possible by changing the cutscenes to remind you of the plot point you have reached.

I've played Quake, Doom, Duke Nukem, and the original Wolf3D, Timesplitters, and so many 'classics' but The Darkness, truely is the most involved, addictive 1st person I've ever played and with a great story, dark atmosphere, beautiful gritty graphics, excellent dialogue, original gameplay and price, I'd say a must for anybody over the age of 18.

4 out of 5 stars I would love a sequel!   December 29, 2008
Please bear in mind that it is over a year since I last played The Darkness but what I can remember is how much I really enjoyed this game!

It had a great storyline, great dialogue, brilliant characters and solid gameplay. The graphics are fully what you'd expect in a next-gen game, although not the best, they are definitely nowhere near the worst. Overall in my own opinion, this game is possibly better than a lot of games released today. I must have played about 30 games since The Darkness was released and I can confidently claim that this game sits neatly in my top 10, alongside the CODs, LBP & FIFA09, Drakes Fortune and a few others, so as you can see, I like a whole variety of games. If a game is good, then I will like it, be it a FPS, RPG, Platformer or whatever.

So all in all I really liked The Darkness. It has some flaws here & there but in all honesty, what game doesn't.

Oh, I nearly forgot; I would love a Darkling as a pet! They are EXCELLENT!

5 out of 5 stars A truly beautiful masterpiece   November 16, 2008

I saw this in GAME for 8 a few days ago and decided to give it a try. I thought it was just a bargain game that flopped and was on clearance. Honeslty I knew it was bargain of the century when I played it! It's got a killer story, awesome graphics (even tho I'm playing on a 15 inch tv!) and a lead character you just understand so much!

I cannot put it into writing really. Just buy it and see for yourself! it's one of the cheapest (and in my opinion the best) games PS3 has to offer. A truely beautiful game, shame nobody bought it!

4 out of 5 stars Mediocre and over far too quickly   October 7, 2008
Decent FPS with good graphics & story, though it is over far too quickly, with not a lot in it to bring you back in for more. To be honest, I was quite relieved when I completed it, as I wouldn't have to watch another one of those annoying cutscenes.

And multiplayer? Well, let me just say that it wasn't enough to keep me from selling this on.

5 out of 5 stars just buy it   September 5, 2008
If you like films such as underworld or the crow, and music such as tool or a perfect circle, this'l be worth the money.

Its a revenge story, with a twist, zombie like undead, renegade cops, the mafia and a huge shot of darkness follwed by demonic powers: admitted to you against your will.

Bought with low expectations, certainly delivered more than what was advertised. So far great story, wonderfull effects, oh and plug into a stereo if you can and the atmosphere will be stunning.

worth it
