Amazon.co.uk Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter. The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles | Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat | World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever | The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes | The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world. Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity. Key Features - Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
- Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
- Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
- Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
- Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

Shaemful cash-in on the COD brand. January 7, 2009 I, like many, went into this game having reasonably enjoyed every installment up to COD 4, which I avoided because of the reviews. I am an avid FPS-gamer, anything to do with shooting stuff and blowing stuff up and im there (some may see that as alarming but I find it more enjoyable than buying houses in some imaginary world, GTA anyone?)
Anyway, I mainly bought the game for it's co-op campiagn. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. The co-op campiagn is so scandalously unfinished it almost feels like I purchased a knock-off version that was made by some guy in his basement. There is no tutorial to gently guide you into the gameplay, which my younger brother was hoping for being a casual gamer. There isn't even proper split-screen. That's right, you are stuck with 25% of screen that isn't being used and on smaller TV's this becomes hugely frustrating. To top it all off, you play the same character.
In my opinion Gears of War 2 is the pinacle of co-op gaming that features pretty much everything that makes that form of gaming enjoyable. You really feel like you are inside the character, controlling everything he does. Call of Duty: World at War is like it's ugly younger brother that people only want to see at Christmas.
I tend to play a lot of games I buy on Xbox Live as well so I tried this out. First time I played, I died within 5 seconds of spawning. I respawned again and died even faster. I like to plan strategies and get to high buildings to cover ground with my sniper. In this game you can't do that. It's a shoot-shoot-die-sprint-shoot-die kind of FPS. You can have little or no strategy and still end up with 400 kills at the end of the round. It doesn't matter if you know the maps well of not, there will always be someone behind you. It's a case of whoever can lift his crosshair faster to aim gets the win. Also, you tend to run at 45 mph as well (picture the duracell bunny) like some super-human version of Usain Bolt making it a stroll to cover 100m in under 3 seconds. I've never seen so many sniper-unfriendly maps in any game, ever.
There is also quite a few, shall we say, *unique* touches to the online experience. One feature called 'Release the hounds' is a charming little adventure which involves you running for your life from a pack of blood-hungry dogs (nice). Next we have the 'Recon Plane' which flys above you giving away your position to the opposition (again, sniper-unfriendly anyone?). Finally, if those don't get you you will have to deal with the 'Artiliery Strike' against your position which will be sure to send you back towards the sun in 18 million little pieces. Oh, did I mention the little perks you get when you get to certain levels? I didn't? Well, you're in for a treat. It seems, when you get to different levels (say 18, you start at 1 obviously) you will become invisible to aforementioned recon planes and harder to kill. So, you have to somehow make it to level 18 whilst dying 200+ times per round to stop being cheated out of a death.
This is supposed to be the most-played game on Xbox Live! Makes you think what is going on in the World. Until the next COD installment (which will probably be released next month) I'd avoid this like you'd avoid a plague-infested rat.
Hmmmmm.... January 6, 2009 I bought this game because i enjoyed call of duty 3 and 4 and thought how amazing it should be.
I got it home and found that the single player (what i did of it) was pretty naff and i really didnt like the way the screen split in co-op mode!
Multi player online was a bit better, not as good as COD 3 and 4. I didnt really enjoy most of the maps and gave up on it all pretty soon.
I traded it in and forgot about it until the other day and now im craving to play it again! Im not sure why, im always playing COD4 and im more than happy sticking to it but a part of me wants me to buy world at war again!
Buy it and see what happens!
COD 5 review January 6, 2009 I thought this game would be rubbish judging by the quality of COD 3 and the BETA, however I have been pleasently surprised by the enjoyment I get out of this game. I believe this is because Activision in their wisdom have told Treyarch to copy Infinity Ward i.e. the recipie for success.
COD4 was by anyone's standard a masterpiece of how to make a game. World at War is very similar but has changed the dynamic of the game a lot with bigger maps and different weapons and perks and of course vehicles. I really like the mulitplayer maps, lots of places to hide and good symmetry makes them a lot of fun. Personally I always play Hardcore mode on any of these games because its more realistic and therefore more intense and more fun, so I recommend you do that.
The graphics are obviously top drawer thanks to activision but when the player runs it is actually quite funny. I don't think any soldier or even human for that matter would ever do a ballet dance tip toe run like Treyarch have designed. Its amusing.
The single player campaign is very very good, but for me its a little to easy even on vetren. Maybe I have played FPS to much now and that's why, as I know what is going to come next. Still, its great playing as three or four different characters during the game and adds variety.
I would give this game 5 stars BUT COD4 got 5 stars and its not quite there because Infinity Ward have told the makers of World at War what to do. Well done Treyarch for listening though.
Happy gaming
2 steps forward, 1 step back January 5, 2009 The Infinity Ward-produced COD2 was one of the finest FPS available on any platform. Sublime single player action and a consistantly enthralling storyline coupled with excellent (for the time) online multiplayer.
Along came Treyarch and the very mediocre COD3. Stupid AI, boring level design and a crappy story took the franchise a step backwards, but it was propped up by a strong mulitplayer offering.
Infinity Ward then blew COD3 out of the water with COD4. Although the single player mode was woefully short it was extremely intense and well made. The online multiplayer really set the standard offering of the most intense experiences over Xbox Live.
So here come Treyarch again. Have they learnt anything since COD3? Has the extra time in development made any difference (apparently COD3 was a rush job). Yes and no.
It's World War II again. Another game with M1 Garrand. Another COD with a tank mission. Another COD with splinter storyline than doesn't help build any empathy with the characters.
In fairness though the level design is a vast improvement on COD3. The Japanese/flamethrower missions are a blast and there is an underlying feeling of dread and danger throughout the Soviet missions. Airplane and tanks missions are nothing more than filler though. There's a lot more blood and dismemberment - which is nice! Presentation is all a bit too flash though, the cut-scenes/level intros detract from the sobering stories they are trying to tell.
Unfortunately, as with COD3, it's let down by Treyarch's approach to AI. Your comrades/squad are by far the most useless and unreliable I've come across to date. They stand in front of you and let enemy through to attack you, spend hours shooting but never actually kill anything, and worst of all - they push you out of cover directly into line of fire!
Enemy AI isn't much better. Treyarch stick with the chaining system that made COD3 such snooze-fest. Enemies will respawn and cover the same postions over and over until you cross The Magic Line that stops them, turning most of the game into a smoke-and-sprint to the next Magic Line or checkpoint.
The worst addition to the series though is, by far, grenade spamming. Apparently all enemies now carry at least 15 grenades each and have an uncanny ability to pitch grenades (a) at your feet despite you hiding against 4 foot cover and (b) not only at your retreat position, but the position you decided to move to because you knew the retreat position would be grenaded!! This isn't so much of a problem on the easier settings, but on Veteran it makes some levels ridiculously hard to the verge of impossible and extremely frustrating. Although Veteran on this COD is probably the easiest of the whole series certain sections are made 10 times more infuriating by grenade spamming (I'm looking at you Blowtorch & Corkscrew!!).
Multiplayer is pretty much a direct port from COD4, in fact it might as well be COD4:World War II. Decent enough maps but some really appalling respawn issues and glitches that should have been ironed out in beta testing.
Overall this is a decent game and Treyarch have improved on COD3 but haven't really added anything of worth to the series - apart from maybe a flamethrower.
Please, no more World War II!!
5 Star Game January 4, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game is amazing!!
The solo game is brilliant and becomes increasingly difficult as it should. You could complete the game in 1-2 days which is short. But online play is what makes this game so good!
people who say its not as good as COD 4 and give it a 1 or 2 star rating for that reason are just making the game look like it's got bad reviews...but they are pointless and irrelevant reasons!!!
This is by far the greatest WW2 game that's been made so far.
