4 out of 5 stars good game   December 6, 2008
bought this game a couple of days ago and thought it was worth a review.after last years game i wasnt expecting much from pro evo 2009 but im pleasantly surprised it feels like a new game which last years version didnt. the passing and player movement is more realistic and visually it looks good .im not talking huge advances here its nowhere near the xbox 360 version as far as graphics go but this is a ps2 game so thats no surprise. still getting used to the remapped controls such as some tricks being on the d pad i wasnt going to buy it at all but im happy i did of course its not perfect the referees still make strange decisions and the online part of the game has gone completely which to be honest doesnt affect me cos ive never play it online on the plus side there are some nice touches like a new stat screen that keeps a record of every game youve played whether competitive or friendly against the computer which you can reset whenever you want.the community feature which allows friends to keep a record of matches played against each other to see whos the best player is still there and the become a legend mode looks interesting even if i did get sent off in the first 10 minutes of my league debut.if i was reviewing last years game i would struggle to give it 3 stars but but this years version feels like pro evos of old with some nice extra touches such as the become a legend mode so im happy to give it four.

3 out of 5 stars It'll do   November 13, 2008
The price pretty much sums it up. This is a fairly solid incarnation of the series bearing in mind most of Konami's efforts are going into the Next-Gen versions.

The 'Become a Legend' mode is a nice idea but (as anyone who's played as 'fixed' on the old PESs while the comp controls the rest of the team)has very slow gameplay and frustrating as the AI doesn't learn how you like to play and often does irritating things like giving the ball away cheaply from a pass and wandering into opposition players with the ball at their feet.

Ultimately though if you want a footy game for when the boys (or girls) come round and don't want to/can't fork out for an Xbox 360 or PS3 then this is more than adequate and capable of filling hours with multiplayer fun.

If you don't have any friends though then it'll end up on your shelf pretty quick!

Konami have now been using the same game engine for 7 years and given that 1 year is a long time in the world of hi-tech you probably have some idea of how outdated this game now is.Konami have tried everything over the years to avoid actually spending out on a total revamp:marking so tight your players couldn't turn, levelling out of players abilities so that every cpu player's as talented as the world's best players etec, etc, etc. I'm still playing 6 occasionally in which the cpu players execute more sliding tackles from behind in one game than most teams get away with in a season.13 seasons into the master league and iI think the refs have issued 2 red cards to the opposition. It's okay until the cpu players turn on their super powers and then my team's usually stuffed.Same thing here.Nothing's changed. If you're playing the master league your team can't tackle or head the ball and the goalkeepers can't catch it.The pitch is too small and the cpu players too fast, which means they can attack with 9 men and defend with 9 and have 10 in midfield and the goalkeepers are too big. That's why it's difficult to score, not because it's tactically brilliant. They can also dribble from way inside their own half avoiding your pathetic attempts at tackling. And despite all that I still finish every season in the top 3.Boring.
Surely Konami must realise that a very large proportion of people buy this for the master league and it's just boringly predictable now. The opposition teams never let their heads drop whatever the score - 6-0 up and a chance for you to put on some young players for a bit of experience with time to stroke it around a little, no chance. The opposition keeps on playing like it's 1-0 and all to play for.Boring. How about the second leg of a cup game? You're 2-0 down and playing at home. 6 minutes in a cpu defender clatters your forward from behind and off he goes injured. No red, not even a yellow.2 minutes later they score. You now need to score 5 goals. And by half time you've had 10 shots saved and are goalless, but they're now 2-0 up again, meaning you need 7 in the second half.I mean, what is the point? It's not accurate,it's not fun and it's not entertaining. It's just irritating.I haven't bought this game new since pes 4 and I after renting this I won't be buying this new either and maybe, like 2008, not at all.

3 out of 5 stars another just average game   November 7, 2008

Major Flaws...
**You tab the shoot button and the ball just flys over the bar, there is no way of controlling where the ball is going.. you tap it very quickly and it just goes straigh into the keepers arms.. they have no ability to keep the ball on the floor..
**The offside rule still aplies if a player is offside but not involved in the play.
**The master leauge is good, you get to buy players and make the team better. But after the season after letting me buy a load of players and making my team good.. it just said. GAME OVER.. I thought the idea was to make your way to the top after a few seasons of buying players.. not just to end suddenly after the first season. Feel like you have waisted you time
**This game doesn't have the champions leauge on it when Amazon has placed the video on the description. You asume it has what the video shows, unless it says otherwise.. Which it doesn't.. False advertising, no?!
**The game needs to load alot, whenever a sub is made, which breaks up the flow of th game alot.

1 out of 5 stars WASTE OF MONEY!!!!   November 3, 2008

It was bad enough that Amazon took over a week to deliver the game after its release date - and then when it finally arrived, and I put it in the PS2 expecting the usual half-dozen 0-0's before getting to grips with the new controls and features, I was immediately disappointed.

Bar a couple of minor changes to menus and naming of features, this is basically identical to the last game, but with updated squad lists - and of course, having updated all the team's and player's names in the last version and stayed on top of the major transfers, I was probably better off with that version.

Complete waste of money.
