5 out of 5 stars RPG of the highest order   January 2, 2009
Bethesda Game Studios achieved something that is to-date, unrivaled on any next-gen console in my opinion.

Oblivion is both beautiful and harrowing, vast but at the same time very intriquit, it has immense depth whilst giving the option to explore only if you desire.

Your character is customizable in nearly all aspects from the race, type of player you wish to be and exactly how you wish your character to appear in game. Depending on what race you choose depends on what attributes you will be assigned like how intelligent you will be or how good you are at bartering to how you fair with different kind of weaponry. Will all these aspects, the game has such longevity and replayability it is untrue. I have owned this game on 2 separate occasions now as the first time I traded it in. Then I came across the "Game of the Year Edition" which I didn't previously have. My Oh My, the game is EPIC in every which way what with the additional expansions (Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine). I must have played this game well over 60 hours with much more to play and I was not once bored. Okay so some caves, castes etc are identikit in that they look identical but I could see past that. Missions are plenty and varied, like the following guilds you can join (all at the same time if you like):-

The Fighters Guild - you are there as an army for hire.
The Mages Guild - You are there for the good of the mages, you will learn magic etc
The Thieves Guild - You are hired to steal many items for the guild
The Dark Brotherhood - You are sent on assassination plots, here you get to act like a hitman & "whack" people.

Then you have the expansion packs, they add easily an additional 20 hours (minimum) to the overall game. They really are the cherry on the icing and blew me completely away. Where you actually can become a god or get a team of knights together - FANTASTIC stuff, the stuff of boyhood dreams!

The graphics are great and the sound is really good with voice acting from such people as Patrick Steward (Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek and Sean Bean (Silent Hill movie or the TV series Sharp). Although these two legends are just a couple of the voice actors, the dialogue can become overused and many of the characters have the same voice but nevertheless, this doesn't distract from the brilliance of the game too much). There are a few bugs and glitches that I came across but for the size of this game, I simply didn't care. There has been so much effort poured into this game you really do appreciate what has been done.

I cannot do this game justice and put into words how wonderful this game is and just how engrossing I personally found it to be.

I'm actually thinking about buying it for a third time!

5 out of 5 stars Undisputed Greatest Game Of All Time   December 30, 2008
Oblivion is a must for anyone who enjoys the freedom of 'free roaming games'. I have spent all my gaming time for the last 2 months playing this and still have only completed around a third of the game.

The graphics are some of the best currently available, the game play some of the best available. You can interact with ALL characters in the game, some more than others, but the feature is available to ANY character in the game. This allows for you to find out information on current quests and also to begin new ones. You have the choice of moving from one quest to another at will, also the whole world is still open to you even when you are on a quest.

One major feature of this game is the fact that you can choosed to be ANY character that you wish. There are several pre-defined characters for you to choose from all with their own skills and attributes or you can make up your own. There are also a choice of several races for your character, all of which should help you choose the type of character that you wish to be. Another feature of the game is the fact that you are constantly improving and upgrading your character's skills.

The people who made this game also made Fallout 3, fans of this should play Oblivion as it is a lot, lot better. I know to ardent fans of Fallout 3 this sounds impossible but believe me I was one of them!

5 out of 5 stars BUY! DONT THINK BUY!   November 25, 2008

Basically u are a prisoner and u get out cause of the king escaping. He gets assassinated and u have to find the heir to the throne. The GREAT thing is. U DONT HAVE TO DO THAT. u can just go off on ure own killing ppl (not so fun actually) or u can join a faction. Thieves guild, fighters guild, mages guild and the dark brother hood(basically assassins) All of which are fun. Id say start off with the dark brother hood U get the most money.

There's also the arena which is fun. Just like the Romans. kill ppl. For any1 who doesn't know u have to complete the quest "A Door In Nibien Bay" to go to the shivering isles.

All in all a fun game that will take u about 70hrs to complete (probably more). Sireously DONT THINK BUY!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Too many bugs in the GOTY edition   October 18, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

First off, I do rate this game very highly, but this particular edition is not worth the hassle of the bugs which Bethesda do not feel the need to fix. The only extra that this version has is the Shivering Isles expansion (which is where most of the extra bugs come from); I played through the game and completed Shivering Isles, I didn't feel that it was worth it for all the problems caused by the bugs - mostly these bugs manifested themselves as game crashes, leaving you with no chance to save your progress and no warning. There is also the vampire cure glitch, meaning that if you become a vampire, either through accident or choice, the vampire cure quest cannot be completed so you're stuck as a vampire forever; this glitch is apparently not present in the original version.

I eventually sold my GOTY edition and purchased the original instead. So far I don't think I have encountered half as many problems; the game still crashes on occasion, but it is rare and more often than not it gives a warning (the sound goes wonky) and in over half of those times it does actually recover and continue to play normally. I don't think I have ever encountered the bug where the game crashes during loading (sometimes happens when moving through a door), and no problems playing as a level 40+ character.

Some people have said that crashing occurs because of the PS3 overheating, to this I say balls! It crashed for me on a cold system just as often as it would on a warm one.

Good game but Shivering Isles is just not worth all the problems, buy the original instead. The original still contains the Knights of the Nine quest which is much better than Shivering Isles in my opinion, and contains no glitches that I'm aware of.

5 out of 5 stars ''follow your own path in your own world''   August 29, 2008
OBLIVION:
First off the game is outstanding and comes second in my opinion to the massive online rpg world of warcraft, the game althogh offline gives you more quests than any other games and lasts a staggering 500 hours.

There are hundreds of goals, you can barter objects with other characters for gold to purchase houses, horses for faster travel, other furnitre, potions, drink ECT and other enchanted and strong weapons, clothing and armor wich can be used to kill many other animals, creatures enchanted, mystical, dangerous, fantasy, and realistic and of course other enemies, gods, devils, and people that can range from dark elfs and lizards to lions and magicians, talking about magic you can practise it and use it whenever you want you can turn invisible, cast fire balls, lightning bolts and snowballs, this also follows bethsedas motto "follow your own path" because you can foolow the path of a wizard swordsman fighter a mixture or all and theres more paths than that.

Every quest has a consequence as you make a rang of bizare, evil and good decisions wich there will be many for instance if you kill someone wich if you do they never come back but if you kill someone in a quest or let them live they will sometimes help you in other quest and unlock things for you or just hold you back later on when you might have to kill them anyway, there are some uniqe items in the game that can be dropped lost and never seen again althogh if you drop something it stays there forever, this is all thanks to the ps3's very powerful cell processer wich saves all objectes dropped and even when your not there the game actually makes characters move miles away meaning that in the top screen characters who can't die but are part of a quest that go unconcious appear there you may find someone goes unconicious even if your on the other side of the map! wich takes about half an hour to cross mabye even more than that you can also join guilds about 4 wich unlock secrets.

It also uses the physics engine wich make the bodys of dead, armor, food and every object in the game fall realistic the ps3 can hold loads of items falling at once wich nis also helped again by the cell processer.

there are expansions packs 2 in total are downloadable but are free and already in the cd thanks to very large blue-ray disk listed below

KNIGHTS OF THE NINE: But because this is the game of the year edition it also includes the knights of the nine expansion pack, where you play as a crusader for the nine wich are nine gods and your objective to destroy umarail, the game also features new knight that can follow you and defend you to the death new knight aromor and weapons wich are enchanted every item new locations people and friends.

SHIVERING ISLES:
Shivering isles is half the size of cyrodill wich is quite big for expansion it's more fun than oblivion and is a mad realm owned by sheogorath your objective to become a deodric god and defend the realm shivering isles.

The costumes are much better the weapons and armor are more powerful and magic is more powerful wich you can take and sell for more gold in cyrodill also there are new creatures.

Oblivion is another realm part of the original game owned by another deadric god (deadric are evil and there are deadric weapons) wich you have to destroy, and defend cyrodill to stop the deadric god from invading.

Overall I give the game 9/10 exellent as you know by the name it's the games of the year and although it's a great game there are still faults.

1 even thogh the graphics are great the other places are and backround are not very graphically detailed there's no real next gen look about the game and it seems your really restricted to only a couple of actions the jumping looks unrealistic the horse sometimes gets trapped in the ground sometime the constance use of the cgi system, cell processer and physic engine really tires ps3 out sometimes crashes and gets it very hot and loud also save data sometimes corrupts after a while it gets less fun but also could be addictive and when that happens elder scrolls expects to be nerdy if you play to much.
It's general type is rpg but probably could be classed as action, puzzle, adventure nearly every type, and there is probably something for everyone and the negative things about it bearly happen the price is a bargain your not only getting oblivion wich on this website costs 40.00 but your getting massive the shivering isles expansion and knights of the nine plus I have bothe oblivion and game of the year and I notice a couple of new tracks, new sound effects for walking and probably much more and your getting it for half the price wich is crazy worth buying the game again for extra expansions. also try the gameof the year edition stragedy guideElder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Official Strategy Guide (Prima Official Game Guides)and try the xbox versionThe Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Game of the Year Edition (Xbox 360)
