The release of Wipeout HD comes hot on the heels of Wipeout Pulse. Its release will elicit sighs of relief from enthusiasts, who might have harboured concerns for the future of the series, after the surprisingly poor chart performance of Wipeout Pulse.

Veterans of Wipeout Pulse and Wipeout Pure will slip easily into this game, meeting up with familiar teams, racetracks, weapons and music. Obviously, there are some new features, but it is the visual experience that really sets this latest game apart!

The game can be played on 8 racetracks, all of which will be familiar to veterans (6 are from Pure and 2 from Pulse). But thanks to a resolution of 1080p at 60 frames per second coupled with the power of PS3, the remastered racetracks look absolutely superb. Photo mode lets you freeze the action, and the picture can then be saved on PS3’s hard drive. From there it can be transferred to your PC for manipulation and enhancement. The soundtrack comes from Pulse, but if you fancy something new, you can replace it with your own custom soundtrack. When playing Zone mode, you will be treated to a stunning interaction of sound, visuals and action. The colour of the racetrack changes as your ship gathers speed, and you’ll get to glimpse visualisations of the soundtrack, displayed on billboards, as you zoom past.

Wipeout HD is not an easy game; you will need to hone your reflexes to outsmart and outpace some fast, clever and aggressive AI opponents, who will attempt to nudge your ship towards a disastrous encounter with a wall or an explosive device. The new Pilot Assist feature is a navigation aid that will be welcomed by newcomers, who can use it while adjusting to the demands of the game.
There are 8 teams, all taken from Pulse. Weapons have also been imported from Pulse, but they have been added to and visually enhanced.
There are five race modes: Single Race, Time Trial, Tournament, Speed Lap and Zone mode. In Single Race your ship is up against 7 others, who you can progressively eliminate using collected weapons. Speed Lap and Time Trial are just what their names suggest: in the former you are attempting to smash track records, and in the later you must beat a deadline. In Zone mode you go faster and faster, until your craft explodes!

Sony intends to offer 8 player online races. You will get to see leader boards, which will display data such as race records and lap times. Sony also plans to offer downloadable extras, which will add variety to the game.
