Samurai Warriors 2: Xtreme Legends is a slash and hack expansion of the successful Samurai Warriors franchise. This Koei release is available on PS2 or downloadable on Xbox 360.

The action takes place in the turmoil that characterised feudal Japan in the Sengoku or Warring States period, which lasted from the middle of the 15th century to the start of the 17th century. Gamers will be treated to an exaggerated flavour of this turbulent era, as they slash and hack their way through a multitude of opponents, in massive battles.

S
eries veterans will encounter a number of new characters such as Motochika, Toshiie and Gracia, while re-meeting Yoshimoto together with Kojiro and Katsuie, who have new weapons available such as an ex-dimensional sword. Musou special attack, which you charge up by slaughtering sufficient enemies, adds considerable spice to the action.

Extreme Legends is an accessible game with six levels of difficulty, designed to cater for the whole range of ability and experience. The top levels, as you might expect, are the most rewarding, with the higher drop rate for gold giving you more spending power, when buying weapon upgrades or skills.

Mercenary mode, a new option, is the mainstay of the game. The rip-roaring missions, if successfully completed, bring the reward of gems, and you maybe asked to team up with a commander’s clan to engage in siege missions or invasions. If you manage to accumulate the required number of special swords, a final, testing and ferocious battle will ensue. You may even succeed in reuniting the whole of Japan!

Both the story mode and the free mode offer two player options. Free mode will particularly appeal to gamers who just want to indulge in rule free combat.

The graphics maintain the standards set by the previous offerings of both the Samurai and Dynasty Warriors franchises.

It is important to realise, however, that this is an expansion, and to enjoy all of its functionality you must have Samurai Warriors 2.

Newcomers to the series will find that this is a very playable slash and hack game, which is enhanced by its historical and perhaps unfamiliar setting. Series veterans will welcome the extra characters and additions.
