Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit |
Released in High Definition, Burst Limit has taken the wild, ultra-frenetic action of the highly successful Dragon Ball Z series to the next generation. However, if you want to enjoy the fabulous 3D effects and online fights, you will need the PlayStation 3 (or Xbox 360).

Burst Limit is not just a top-of-the-range fighting game; its superb story mode seems to drift seamlessly between video game and anime. You will encounter most of the dramatic scenes of the anime, as you follow the multitude of paths offered by the branching storyline. The precise path you take will be determined by your actions.

The battles are incredibly fast, furious, high speed affairs that might appear daunting to a newcomer to the series. But don’t worry, Burst Limit is not as technically involved as some fighting games, so mastering it is not that difficult. You will quickly see your performance improving by leaps and bounds, particularly if you use the AI fights as ‘tutorials’. Basically you use two attack buttons to unleash your combos (the action can be put on hold in order to view a command list of possible combos). There is also guard and the ability to release various fire balls. Your charging Ki meter can be unleashed, allowing you to make ultra high speed special attacks that give variety to the fights. The essence of the game, however, remains the combination of speed and power. A really powerful blow that knocks a character back provides the only respite from the frenetic pace of the action.
The battles can be played online, but the action is limited to one vs. one.
The graphics are simply stunning – easily the best of the series: gamers will become totally immersed in the Dragon Ball Z world. The fighting ranges over enormous, impressive environments. With a powerful blow you can propel your unfortunate opponent through a mountain or high into a huge sky. The graphically enhanced fighters are indistinguishable from anime characters: the facial detail is such that emotions are clearly registered.

The soundtrack is down to Kenji Yamomoto, the composer of the original anime music. That is endorsement enough!
Burst Limit has taken the series forward into High Definition. If the developers aimed to produce a game that is accessible to newcomers, and at the same time meets the expectations of series veterans, then they have succeeded! A brilliant game – buy it now.
