Hooking up your PS3 to your TV is simple. The box will contain a standard composite cable/SCART block,
but to get the best picture from your PS3 you will need to buy one of the following cables and follow the
simple set-up guide...

Composite

AV Composite Cable for Sony PS3

The poorest quality lead, and bundled with PS3 – it won’t show off the power of your consoles graphics. Look for the red, white and yellow sockets on your TV then slot them in – but only for as long as it takes to adjust display settings.
RGB SCART

Premium RGB Scart Cable (PS3)

If you own a PS2, the chances are you will be familiar with this lead. It usually plugs into the EXT1/EXT2 slot marked with SCART on it. It provides a brighter signal than composite, with a far greater contrast.

Component

Premium Component Cable (PS3)

The entry-level HD cable that’s capable of producing 1080p visuals – it’s the standard lead bundled with Xbox 360. It should set you back about £20. But if you TV allows it, go for HDMI...
HDMI

HDMI Cable (PS3)

This is the cable of choice, a pure digital connection that doesn’t suffer from any analogue-induced slowdown. The cable is priced between £20-80, but check your HDTV to make sure it’s got a socket for HDMI before buying.

The Basics
Sure, you’ve probably got this in hand, but we want you to get the most out of your PS3 so we’re
starting from the basics, making you clear on all the terms we’re going to use, where to access
the various options and how to get around your PS3 efficiently.

Cross Media Bar:

This is the operating system for PS3 and PSP, it works on two different axes: the horizontal one
showing categories and the vertical one displaying the options within each category.
Pressing (X) lets you confirm an operation or lets you go back. Pressing (circle) cancels an
operation or lets you go back. Pressing (triangle) displays the Control Panel, while pressing
the PS button allows you to view the Home menu.

Using Multiple Features:
Using the Control Panel and the Home menu you can use several PS3 features at the same
time – so you can go to the music menu, press (triangle) and select which track to play. Then
press the PS button to return to the Home menu and then view you images in the photo option
or browse the PS Store.

Creating User Account:
When you switch the PS3 on you are asked to sign un as a User or to Create a new user.
The benefit of having multiple users if that each one can have their own theme and
background settings, saved data for PS3 games and, when associated with a PlayStation
Network account, a separate Friends list as well. Its also useful when you have users going
on the Network and playing games or visiting the Store. So you can have one User as the
Master Account while the others only have access to Sub Accounts. See the online section
for setting up these Master and Sub Accounts.

Updating The PS3 Firmware:
Firmware is a programme that’s embedded in a hardware device, so when ere discussing
firmware in relation to PS3, it means were referring to all the wonderful features accessible
via the XMB. Sony regularly updates the firmware to include new and exciting content, so
you must make sure you have the latest version.

Online:
When your PS3 is connected to the internet go to settings > System Update and
select ‘Update via the internet’. You will either get a message saying your system is already
up to date OR an update will start downloading. Updates can be up to 120Mb in size so you
might have to wait a short while until it’s all downloaded.

USB Stick:
Go to http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3 and find the System
Software Updates box on your PC. Then download the file and put it in on a USB stick in a
folder you should label UPDATE. Then follow the same procedure as above but, when
asked, choose ‘from a Storage Medium’ rather than ‘Via internet’. To keep tabs on your
firmware just go to Setting menu in XMB, select ‘System Settings’ and then
‘System Information’. The current version will be displayed in the System Software field.

Play Movies From Any Country:
Many Blu-ray movies are region-free. Check http://bluray.liesinc.net/ to see what
disks work on your UK PS3. However, you’re UK PS3 WON’T like American or Japanese
DVDs. Your UK machine doesn’t support the NTSC video format they use.

Wake Up PS3 By Remote:

Here’s a cool trick. Shut down your PS3 (by holding the pads central PS button),
but keep the power switch at the back, set to ‘on’. Your PS3 will be ready and waiting
on standby – the red light on the front shows that it’s still ‘there’. Now try on a pad
(by pressing the PS button) and your PS3 will start up, ready to link with it.

Broadcast To You PSP:
On your PSP, go to setting, then Network Settings > Infrastructure Mode, New Connection >
Enter Manual. Go to SSID and call this new connection something obvious – like PS3. Go to
the WLAN Security Setting and edit the SPA0PSK (AES) setting. Enter the WPA key, this is
an eight letter password to identify your PS3 – we suggest simply using ‘password’. On the
PS3 go to Settings > Network Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings. Enter the same
SSID name i.e. (PS3) and then enter the same WPA key i.e. (password). Almost done.
Go to Network on your PS3 and choose Remote Play. It will start looking for your PSP.
Pick up your PSP and go to Network and select Remote Play on your PSP. Your PS3s menus
will now appear on your PS3s screen. Drive around with the PSP D-pad.

Get Game Saves Off The Internet:
Stuck on a game? Chances are someone out there has already beaten that boss and
saved their game afterwards. Google ‘PS3 game saves’. There are hundreds of
finished game saves all over the internet. Download the save you want – it’ll come in a
‘PS3’ folder that you can lift onto a USB stick and put into your PS3. Go to the Game
menu, choose your stick and the game save you downloaded should be right there.
Press (Triangle) to copy it to your hard drive.

Hack Any Password:
Using a PS3 that has been locked out of internet access or movie playback?
Go to System > System Settings and choose ‘Restore Default Settings’.
This will reset all settings, including the password back to ‘0000’.

Make Free Video Phone Calls Via The USB Headset:
You will need a USB headset and an EyeToy camera. Plug in both via USB and go to
your friends list. Choose a friend and press (triangle). Choose ‘Start New Chat’ and
type a message. Providing they’re in front of their PS3, they will see your message
and have the option to accept your video chat. Now, as long as they have a camera
and headset, two windows will open up, showing yourself and your mate.
Hit (triangle) again to invite more people – up to six people can join.

Play Games From Any Country:
It’s true. Unlike the PS2. You can now buy games from anywhere in the world
and play them on your UK PS3 – there’s no region protection encoding.
We recommend American games, though, because they’ll be in English.
Note: this only applies to PS3 titles – not PSOne and PS2 games.
Don’t buy those, they won’t work.

Customise Your Slide Shows:
During a photo slideshow, move the right six axis to zoom in on images and to
alter the speed of the playback.

Get Your PS2 Game Saves Onto Your PS3:
There is only one way: the official Sony PS3 Memory Card Adaptor. Plug this small box
in to your PS3 and you can plug your cards into it and copy the saves across.
The £10-20 price tag seems steep but once you have copied your cards you will never
need it again, meaning you can sell it on.

PS2-PS3 Memory Card Adaptor (PS3)
PS2 > PS3 memory card adaptor only £5.99!

Download Music And Pictures (And Save Them Onto Your Hard Drive):
Just click on the file you want and, provided that it’s in a format recognised by PS3,
it will be downloaded and stored in the right place on your PS3. MP3 files go into your
Music folder and images go into Photos. Watch out for any file compressed as a zip f
ile though. Your PS3 can’t unzip it and won’t know what to do with it – its
uncompressed files only here.

Force PS3 To Show Your Stuff:
Put your photos in a folder called ‘PICTURE’ and your videos in a folder called ‘VIDEO’ –
or simply force your PS3 to look at your files on your USB stick regardless of what you
called them or where you put them. Insert your stick and go to the menu option
you want (Photos, Music) etc. Press (triangle) to bring up a menu and choose
Display All. This will show every file on the stick. It even works for a plugged-in
iPod. Though the multi-folder structure you will reveal is a bit baffling. Still, your
songs and there if you have got the patience to look.

See How Much Charge Is On Your Sixaxis:

Never be caught out again. Press and hold the PS button on your joypad. An on
screen indicator will appear, showing your pad’s charge as a small battery.
A full battery means a fully charged pad.

Have a Light Show:
Select a music track from your Music menu then press (triangle) to bring up
the control panel. Choose the second icon on the top row and press (x). This
will full0frame the ‘music visualize’.

Play Any Video Format On Your PS3:
Download a video convertor to your PC. Use the program to convert your AVI,
MOV, DivX and WMA files to MP4 format. Now make a file on your USB stick
called ‘PS3’ and inside that one make a folder called ‘VIDEO’. Drag your new
MP4 files to this folder and put the stick in your PS3. Head to the Movie folder
on your PS3 and select the stick.

Note: Firmware 2.10 adds standard playback support for DivX, AVI and MOV.

See below:

Store All Your Stuff:

Want to back-up your data? Head to Settings > Back-up Utility. Your PS3 will
now try and find devices connected to your console to use as backup locations.
Any cards inserted in
slots (USB sticks Compact Flash) etc will be found, as will
any external hard drives plugged into USB ports.

Change Your Album Artwork:
When you import a music CD, your PS3 automatically pulls down the album art
and stores it with the tracks. Occasionally it gets it wrong, however, or it simply
may not be able to find the artwork for your less commercial tracks. This is
easily fixed however. Download a pic of the art you need as a JPEG on your PC
and put it onto a stick (In a folder called PICTURE, ideally). Copy it to your Photo
menu (press triangle). Now go to Music and select the album folder with the
offending art. Press (triangle) and select Information. Go to the Photo menu and
select your new picture.

Share Your Downloads:
You can download anything you’ve bought from the store to five PS3’s – useful
if you have got more than one console, or if you have wiped your hard drive and
don’t want to pay for the download twice. However, you can also share your
downloads with your friends. The Playstation Store logs how many times each
download has been made by each user. Go onto your friends PS3 Create New
User and log onto store with your friends ID. You will now be able to go to your
download and see what you have paid for. You can get hold of it again, using
another of your download limits, and give it to your friend for free.

Upgrade Your PS3’s Hard Drive:
Take the drive out of your PS3 console which is a Seagate Momentus 5400rpm
60GB 2.5inch SATA drive. Swap if for example, to a Seagate Momentus 120GB
2.5inch SATA drive and it should work perfectly. Remove the cover on the
bottom of your PS3 carefully. Undo the screw and slide the drive towards the
right and out of your PS3. Undo the four screws on the ‘caddy’ and remove the
old drive. Put your new hard drive in the caddy – it should be exactly the same size.
Slot it back in and slide to the left to make the connections. Put all screws back in
and then restart your console. Select yet to the message that should appear on
your console, and now you have a massive hard drive. To double check it’s
worked, go to Settings > System Settings > System Information – and check it’s listed.

Get this ultra massive 250GB PS3 compatible HDD! Only £65!

Force A Shutdown:
Press and hold the Power button on the front of your PS3 for around then seconds
to force the system to shut down safely. This method should only be used if your
console freezes or crashes. Switching the power on and off at the mains could
potentially corrupt files stored on your hard drive.

Force Disk Eject:
Press and hold the Eject button on the front of your PS3 for around ten seconds
to force the system to safely open the drive.

Reset Video Settings:
Turn PS3 off, press and hold down the Power button located on the front of your
console for around ten seconds. This should reset all video settings to factory default.

Customise Your PS3:
Create your own themes to alter the PS3 desktop. Try searching the web for
‘PS3.p3t theme’ to find a list of downloads for various themes which changes
desktops, menus and fonts for your PS3. You can also design your very own
themes by downloading the PC-only software by Sony.

http://www.us.playstation.com/Content /PS3NetworkPlatform/Updates/
img/ps3_themes/PS3_Cutom_Theme_v101-E.zip
.

Make Thousands Of New PS3 Friends:
To make a new Friend all you need is their PS3 username. Click on Add As
Friend on the Friends menu and enter their username. When they get your
request they can either accept or decline your invite, you can find out if your
friend appears online in the Friends menu. You can find players you have just
played with in a game by going to the Players Met menu.
Try www.gamewith.us/ps3 which lists lots of gamers names to add to your list.

Boost Your WIFI:
If you are experiencing slow downloads and poor connectivity you might want
to try the following. First, try getting a direct ‘line of sight’ between your
wireless router and your PS3. Ensure that nothing is blocking the signal
between your router and console, including furniture. Next, stand both boxes
on end- standing your PS3’s antenna upright should help increase signal strength.
Do the something for your wireless router. Now for the clever part, grab an
empty can of Coke or anything similar, and cut the top off. Cut down the sides
of the can and fan it out so it looks similar to a metal flower. Now make a small
hole in the bottom and place it over your routers aerial so that it pokes through.
Now point it towards your PS3 console. It may look awful, but this trick ensure
that the signal travels through the metal funnel directly towards your PS3, you
should see at least a 10% boost in signal strength.

If you are still getting slow downloads and gameplay, it could be due to
internet-hungry programs left open on your PC, such as, MSN messenger
or P2P programs, switching these off should boost your internet speeds.

PSP And PS3 Remote Play:
Now you can switch on your PS3 using your PSP if you have the latest firmware 2.0
installed on your PS3 console. This allows you to turn on and off your PS3 console
using your PSP remotely, via the internet. In your PSP go to System > Remote Play
and pair your PSP with your PS3. Once both devices are locked together they will
look for each other. Leave your PS3 on standby – this is compulsory and go
anywhere you wish that has a WiFi hotspot. Connect your PSP to your PS3 using
the Remote Play option. Your PS3 will switch on and its menu will appear on your
PS3 console. You can now listen to music, look at photos or watch videos stored
on your PS3.

*Free Media Streaming Software:
Access photos, music and videos from your PC/Mac easily on your PS3 by using
Media Streaming software. You will need a WiFi router/connection and the media
streaming software.

> Change user image
> Change your avatar
> Changing the background
> Installing a theme
> Create video clip previews

Change User Image:
If you are tired of using the grey smiley face as your picture then why not
change it? Login in to your account and then Highlight the user in the User menu,
press (triangle) to get the options for that user, then click on ‘information’.
Then click (X) and you will be able to edit the current image. You can now browse

Just select the one you want. Your photo will now have changed in your account

Sign in to your account, go to the Playstation Network menu and choose Account Management.
Select Edit Online Profile and choose the image you want. Select continue once the online profile
has been updated.

Changing The Background:
The wavy lines in the background may look cool, but if you decide to add your own photo,
here’s how. First of all you will need the picture you want to use as the background, so
copy it over from your USB stick or from you camera. Go to the Photo menu to browse for
the image you want to use and then open it. Press (triangle) to bring up a set of options
and select ‘Set As Wallpaper’. Now you can crop the image is needed to give it a perfect fit.
Use the analogue sticks to zoom in and out, and move the image around. Once done, press ‘Enter’.

Installing A Theme:
A PS3 theme has the file name/extension (.p3t), once you have downloaded your
theme from one of many websites you will need to do the following. Plug USB stick in to
your PC, create a folder called THEME. Save your theme inside the folder you have
just created. Plug the USB stick in to your PS3 USB port. Go to Theme Settings and
then Theme. Select the Install option and then select your USB stick as the storage
device. Select your Theme, if it has worked you will find the Theme available in the
Theme options, so select and choose the Theme Apply option.
If you get the message ‘There are no themes’ check that the theme is located in
the correct folder. You can also find some great themes in the Playstation Store,
also try these out:

www.consolepot.net
www.bestps3themes.com
www.ps3-themes.org

If you want to create your very own themes then search Google for ‘Free PS3 theme creator’.

First go to the Video menus and select the clop you want to create a preview for.
Play that video and then press (triangle) to get the playback controls. Select the
Change Icon option, now there will be a 15 second preview of that video. Select
Yes to continue, wait for the preview to be created and return to the menu to see
what you created. You will now have a full motion thumbnail representing your video.

arrange them in the order you like. Select Playlists under Photo in the home menu.
Select Create New Playlist. Follow the on-screen instructions to create the playlist. Select
a playlist that was created, and then press the button. Select Edit. The images saved on the

added to the playlist. Once the image is added, you can move it up and down with Up and
Down to rearrange it, then pres (circle) to stop editing. You can play the playlist that was
created under Photo > Playlists.

Streaming Data From Your PC:
Enable Media Sharing from the Library in Windows Media Player on your PC.
Search for a media server from your PS3’s Photo, Video or Music menus.
Your PS3 should appear as an Unknown device in the Media Player settings window.
Did you know that your PS3 is DLNA compliant? DLNA stands for Digital Living Network Alliance,
which is a group of companies developing technology to make life easier when sharing videos,
music and images between various devices. This means that your PS3 can talk to your PC and
access media files on your PC.

In order to make this happen you will need some DLNA software installed on your PC.
If you have Windows Vista or Windows Media Player then you won’t need to install anything more.
Enable the media server connection on your PS3 in Network Options.

Go to your PC. Go in to Windows Media Player, in the Library option go down to Media Sharing
and there should be a list of devices that you can share with – the PS3 will be displayed as Unknown.
Allow sharing to this device and then go on to your PS3. If you have problems detecting your PS3,
ensure that any Firewalls or Anti Virus programs are switched off.

On your PS3 go to music and look for the option ‘Search for Media Servers’ and you should find
a Vista Media Icon. Click on that and you will be able to navigate and play anything in the
Windows Media Player library on your PC.

Mac users should try something like Mediatomb http://mediatomb.cc/.

Make your PS2 games look better on PS3
> Upscale your PSOne and PS2 games
> Using PS3's smoothings option
> Memory card adaptor
> Move game saves

Upscale Your PSOne and PS2 Games:

This was added with the 1.80 firmware upgrade. Go to Settings > Game Settings >
PS3 Upscaler and select ‘Normal’ to upscale at a ratio that matches the image or
‘Full Screen’ to stretch it. It will make certain games look jagged, if it does then
switch it off.

Using PS3’s Smoothing Option:
Upscaling allows videos that were recorded at SD resolution (576p/576i) to run
at HD resolution (1080/1080i/720p). The PS3 also allows you to ‘smooth’ the image,
even if you don’t upscale.

Memory Card Adaptor:
Despite having three slots for three types of memory card, the PS3 lacks a PS2 slot.
You can buy an adaptor which gives your PS3 the missing slot. It will let you copy data
from your PS2 cards to your PS3, after that you can bin them if desired. Your PS2 games
will find your saves on PS3 and work just as good as it use to – provided the game works
on PS3.

Move Game Saves:

Take your game saves around to a friend’s by adding the folder PS3>SAVEDATA to any
storage device, including phones and iPods. Now you can carry your game saves around with
you easily. Transfer your game saves between multiple accounts by going into Game on the XMB,
then picking the Saved Data utility. Select the save you want and press (triangle) to bring up a
menu that will allow you to copy it across.

How to get your PS3 online

> Setting up

> Wired connection

> Wireless connection

> Signing up to the Playstation Network
